Auction: 9037 - The "Pierron" Collection of British Commonwealth Missing Colours
Lot: 1673
South Africa — no watermark 3c. Burchell´s Gonolek vertical strip of three with margin at foot, showing major perforation shift and the bottom stamp with deep blue omitted and the stamp above with partial omission, fine. Pierron SA428MCa, £3,250; S.G. 214a, £1,800. Photo Estimate £ 2,500-3,000 Note: The missing deep blue results in the loss of the value, country name, inscriptions and much of the bird detail. The error occurred completely on rows three, four and five of sheet number 7380 and partially on rows two and six. It also exists from the bottom row of a miscut sheet with a down shift of red. It is unknown if the entire row was affected or survives as the error was unrecorded in this format prior to its appearance at a July 2008 IPS auction in Johannesburg where a gum-damaged strip (comprising one example completely missing deep blue) sold for ZAR 40,250. It is possible the IPS strip, and any similar vertical strips if they exist, came from a proof sheet given the tatty appearance and the fact the item appears to have been miscut, has a significant down shift of red, and a weak printing of deep blue
