Auction: 9037 - The "Pierron" Collection of British Commonwealth Missing Colours
Lot: 1621

Northern Rhodesia 1963 (10 Dec.) Arms 1d. complete pane of 120 from Plate 1A with value omitted, central vertical fold, fine. Pierron NR152MCa, £2,250 Estimate £ 600-800 Note: Two black ink plates were used for the printing of the stamps; the leftmost plate number relating to the value. Between eight and ten panes of 120 stamps were discovered with the error. The error exists in an intact 1A pane (ex Sir Gawaine Baillie), a plate block of four (normally 1A–1A–1A–1A–1A) missing 1A referencing black (the value), and in a plate pair (normally 1B–1B–1B–1B–1B) missing 1B. A second intact 1A pane surfaced in early 2009. A used single off-piece is known with a Kitwe cancel. The error is also known on several brown manilla covers all with typewritten business addresses and all postmarked Ndola. All the envelopes came from the same place as the typed letter ´a´ exhibits identical damage on all the addresses. Known business addresses include Border Motor Coy, Fashion Enterprises, Copperbelt Cycle Shop, Lysacht and Co, Bells Asbestos, Macrae and Co, Rent A Car, and Victory Stores. Others doubtless exist. It´s thought the covers were produced by a part time dealer with a friend in a sub-office in Ndola who was prepared to cancel to order.
