Auction: 9037 - The "Pierron" Collection of British Commonwealth Missing Colours
Lot: 1323

Malaysia — Birds 30c. with PVA gum, a block of forty (4x10) from the right of the sheet, the top three rows with blue omitted and the fourth row with a slight omission, virtually severed and folded in half, fine. A rare and impressive multiple. Pierron MY43MCa, £3,600+; S.G. 21a, £3,600+. Photo Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 Note: The missing blue affects the plumage on both birds. It also causes the leaves to appear yellow rather than green (due to green being created by the mix of yellow and blue inks). The error on gum arabic can be readily differentiated from the error on PVA by the very obvious difference in gum colour – arabic is cream coloured while PVA is white. The error is known to have occurred on the top three rows of a 1A pane; the pane was purchased at the time of issue by Mrs G N Lau from the GPO in Kuala Lumpur and reported in the April 1966 edition of Stamp Magazine. Two similar covers with an example of the error exist cancelled SIBU, SARAWAK – one dated 1 NO 65 and the other 2 NO 65. provenance: Sir Gawaine Baillie, November 2006
