The India General Service Medal to Major R. Rainsford Hannay, 45th Rattray´s Sikhs, Killed in Action Leading His Men in an Attack on the ´Bank´ Feature at Shatt el Hai, 1.2.1917 India General Service 1908-35, E.VII.R., one clasp, North West Frontier 1908 (Lieut. R. Rainsford Hannay, 45th. Rattray´s Sikhs), engraved in running script, good very fine Estimate £ 240-280 Major Ramsay Rainsford Hannay, born 1884, the son of Colonel R.W. Rainsford Hannay, D.L., of Creetown, Kirkcudbrightsure; commissioned Indian Army 1904; and appointed Double Company Commander 45th Sikhs the following year; advanced Captain August 1912; served as Acting Major (Second in Command of the battalion) with the Regiment during the Great War in the Mesopotamian theatre of war; he was killed in action leading "B" Company at Shatt El Hai, 1.2.1917; he successfully led two bombing parties to clear the "Quadrilateral" feature of Turks, but on moving forward to the "Bank" feature, ´the intrepid Captain Rainsford Hannay was killed, setting a grand example´ (Regimental History refers); he was posthumously mentioned in despatches and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial.
