London Gazette 15.11.1898 Divisional Staff Sergeant Jack, Middlesex Regiment 2516 Colour Sergeant William John Jack, D.C.M., born Hackney, London; joined Middlesex Regiment, 1888; Sergeant 1895; served in the Sudan 1.7.1898-1.10.1898 (Mentioned in Kitchener´s Despatch for Omdurman, dated 5.9.1898, London Gazette 30.9.1898 and subsequently awarded the D.C.M. for this action); served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa 2.12.1899-15.2.1903, during which time the battalion were part of the garrison of Spion Kop suffering 3 officers and 20 men killed and 5 officers and 60 men wounded, 24.1.1900, and they were also engaged at the battle of Alleman´s Nek (Mentioned in Roberts´ Despatch, dated 4.9.1901, London Gazette10.9.1901); Colour Sergeant 3.4.1900 (L.S. & G.C. 1907, with Gratuity of £5); discharged 16.11.1911, after 23 years service with the Colours.
