A Fine and Rare Army of India Medal to Captain J. Paterson, 4th Bengal Light Cavalry Army of India 1799-1826, short hyphen reverse die type, two clasps, Allighur, Laswarree (Cornet J. Paterson, 4th. Cavy.), officially impressed, extremely fine, in a contemporary fitted leather case Estimate £ 4,500-5,500 Captain James Paterson, born Longforgan, Perthshire, 1784; Commissioned Cornet, June 1800; arrived in India and posted to the 4th Bengal Light Cavalry, January 1801; present at the operations in Jumna Doab, Sasni, Bijaigarh, and Kachaura; served during the Second Maharatta War as part of the Commander-in-Chief General Lake´s Grand Army, and was present at the Capture of Allighur, 4.9.1803, and the Battle of Laswarree, ´as fierce a fight as ever was fought by men´, 1.11.1803. Lieutenant, March 1805; Adjutant, August 1811; Captain, January 1819; retired May 1819. Captain Paterson claimed and personally signed for his Army of India medal in 1851 (original claimants´ list refers).
