g Greece, George II (1935-47) proof AV 25-Drachmai, 1935, bare head left, rev. laurel wreath, mark of value within, crown above (Divo 112; Fr.20), a few very light surface marks, about as struck, extremely rare Estimate £ 5,500-6,000 Only 200 struck out of a planned issue of 750. Following a vote by the Greek people, the monarchy was restored in 1935. King George II, who had lived in London for twelve years, became king in November 1935. To mark the fifth anniversary of the restoration the Greek Government authorised the issue of three souvenir coins, two in gold for 100 and 20 Drachmai and one in silver for 100 Drachmai. Spink and Son were appointed as agents for the issue and the coins were ordered from the Heaton mint in Birmingham. O. Steinberger and Frank Kovacs prepared the dies in late 1939 but production of the coins was disrupted by the outbreak of World War II which meant only a few of the planned issues were actually struck. This coin was orginally acquired from Spink around 1939 and comes with a Spink packet noting ´by appointment to the late King George V.´
