Sierra Leone Sherbro 1888 (12 Oct.) envelope "per Formoso" to Freetown, bearing 1884-91 1/2d. dull green pairs (2) and 1d. carmine each with "sherbro" security handstamp and cancelled "B31", showing "R" in oval h.s. and with a superb strike of the "sherbro/sierra leone" c.d.s., Freetown c.d.s. (14.10) in red on reverse; a couple of the stamps with defects and the envelope with small fault at top, otherwise fine and most attractive. One of only a handful of covers recorded with these security handstamps which were quickly discontinued, and a very early use of the Sherbro c.d.s. S.G. 27, 28. Photo Estimate £ 2,000-2,500
