Liberia The Cromwell Correspondence 1879 (25 Apr.) envelope, with enclosure headed "U.S. Flag Ship ´Ticonderoga´ off Solymah, West Africa", to Philadelphia and endorsed Ship Letter, on reverse Liverpool Br. Packet c.d.s. of 22 May, on the front "t" handstamp, "50" replaced by "20c" both in blue crayon and "20cts Due" in black; fine and rare. Letter number 20. Photo Estimate £ 400-600 Note: The Anglo-Liberian Boundary Commission met in Sierra Leone in 1879 in an attempt to agree a demarcation of the border between the then British Colony of Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Liberian Government asked for a team of United States advisors to assist their delegation in the negociations. B.J. Cromwell, Commander of the U.S.S. ´Ticonderoga´ (at that time on a goodwill world cruise) and Commodore Robert W. Schufeldt were appointed to lead the United States delegation.
