Lagos Incoming Mail From Niger Coast 1898 (Sept.) red printed "telegram!" envelope registered to "The Superintendent African Direct Telegraph Co. Ltd. Steamers first call at Brass (deleted) or Lagos", bearing 1894 1d. vermilion pair and 2 1/2 pale blue each cancelled with oval of eight bars, Lagos c.d.s. (6.9) on reverse. Colourful and attractive. S.G. 52a, 54a. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: Both this telegram, and the cover in the following lot, were posted on board ships in the Niger Coast Protectorate, probably at Forcados, and cancelled on arrival at Lagos. The telegram cable did not extend to Forcados and telegrams would have been sent to Brass or Lagos depending on which way the mail steamer was travelling
