Gold Coast Military and Expedition Mail 1898 (26 Nov.) front to Cape Coast, bearing 1884-91 1d. rose-carmine cancelled with a fine strike of the "gambaga/northern territories/gold coast." h.s. (Types 11 and 12) in violet with separate "24 oct 1898" date h.s. in the same ink at lower left corner, the adhesive additionally cancelled with "kumasi/gold coast" double-ring d.s. (Type 6) with a further strike alongside. Rare and attractive. S.G. 12. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: Gambaga was the capital of the Mamprusi tribe, situated 270 miles north north east of Kumasi The front is addressed in the hand-writing of Lt. Col. H.P.Northcott who was killed in November 1899 during the Boer War. Northcott´s Gambaga Expedition was to occupy the towns of Wa, Nassa and Gambaga, amongst others, in order to prevent the French contacting King Samori provenance: Col. J.R. Danson, 1971
