x Tasmania Early Letters and Handstamps 1832 (11 Feb.) entire letter from John Foster, a prominent early settler, to Yorkshire, headed "Macquarie River, Van Diemans Land", rated "1/4", showing good strike of "hobart town/v.d.l." oval handstamp and, on reverse, framed "india letter/gravesend" and London transit c.d.s. (18.6). Photo Estimate £ 150-180 Note: This letter was carried by the "Mary" which had made several voyages carrying convicts to Australia. On this voyage she had sailed from Woolwich on 11 June 1831, with 151 female convicts, of whom 149 were alive when she arrived at Hobart Town on 19 October, after a passage of 130 days. Under the command of Alex Jamieson, she sailed from Hobart Town on 21 February and arrived at Gravesend on 17 June, after a passage of 117 days, with a full cargo of Colonial produce.
