A Scarce M.G.S. and Regimental Medal Pair to Corporal J. Leary, 27th Foot Military General Service 1793-1814, one clasp, Egypt (J. Leary, Corpl. 27th Foot.); 27th Foot Medal, silver, 38mm, obverse a Castle, above "Twenty-Seventh", below "Inniskilling", reverse engraved ´Alexandria Egypt 1801´ within a raised laurel wreath, edge engraved ´Corpl. J. Leary.´, with silver clip, ring and straight bar suspension, generally good very fine (2) Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 Provenance: Spink 1893 Both Medals are recorded as one time held in the Regimental Museum. Leary´´s Regimental Medal is used as the illustrative example of the award in Regimental And Volunteer Medals 1745-1895 by Balmer. The Peninsular battles in which the recipient was engaged were engraved upon the reverse. The above publication gives approximately 9, including Leary, of such medals known.
