Lloyd´s Medal for Meritorious Service, 3rd ´Circular´ type, silver (Captain Fred Cawcutt, S.S. "Carlo" 1st. October 1916, 9th. November 1918, 23rd. January 1917.), suspension claw loose on planchet, minor edge bruising, otherwise nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 140-180 Captain F. Cawcutt was the Captain of the Wilson Line S.S. Carlo, which was attacked by enemy submarines on three occasions, 1.10.1916, 23.1.1917, and 9.11.1918. On the first two occasions Captain Cawcutt was successful in saving his ship, but on the third occasion it was sunk in the Irish Channel. He was subsequently awarded $500 by the merchant Ships Gratuity Committee (New York Times, 11.7.1920 refers). Previously, on the 26.1.1916, the S.S. Carlo was on her way from the Mediterranean, and had picked up the Dover Pilot, when, shortly after 3:15 pm, having passed the Gull light, she was attacked by an enemy aeroplane, which dropped six bombs, all of which fell clear of the Carlo. The vessel was immediately put on a zigzag course, and successfully evaded the attack (Flight, 3.2.1916 refers).
