To-day Gallantry Fund Medal, silver, reverse engraved ´George Absolom July 1895´, with integral top silver riband buckle, suspension re-affixed, edge bruising, good fine, rare Estimate £ 200-250 George H. Absolom was awarded the To-day Gallantry Fund Medal for rescuing, on the 15th July 1893, Miss Mable Lewis from drowning in the Holy Brook, near Fobney. At the time the brook was being drawn, and, in consequence, the rush of water was very great. There was no doubt that the child would have drowned but for Absolom´´s prompt action. This was George Absolom´´s fifth rescue. He was also awarded a Royal Humane Society testimonial on vellum. The Gallantry Fund Medal was awarded by the magazine To-day, published between 1893 and 1903. Its first Editor was the novelist Jerome K. Jerome, who enthusiastically promoted the idea of the Gallantry Fund, but when he gave up the editorship in 1897 the fund soon fell into disuse. Only 30 medals were awarded, in both silver and bronze.
