Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck Medal, silver, Type 1 1824-1862, obverse: head of King George IV facing left (Mr. T. Thorp. Voted 13 Sep: 1839.), contact marks, very fine, with integral band, eyelet suspension and riband ring Estimate £ 340-380 T. Thorp´´s citation reads, ´´12 March 1839: At 11pm in a gale, the ship Progress, London to Newcastle, drove towards shore at Tynemouth, Northumberland and struck on sand a long way from shore. Mr. Thorp and five sailors set up the Dennett´´s rocket apparatus, but the ship´´s crew was unable to find the first two lines; the third shot being unsuccessful they bent on a warp by which four men were landed. The Master and six other men reached shore using the warp after the tide had fallen materially.´´ Mr. T. Thorp was the Rocket Storekeeper. Provenance: Sotheby 1971
