British Empire Medal, G.VI.R., Military Division (6076479 Cpl. Arthur C. Vickers. R.E.), very fine, mounted as originally worn Estimate £ 130-160 B.E.M. London Gazette 19.11.1943 6076479 Cpl. Arthur Cecil Vickers, R.E., ´´in recognition of gallant conduct in carrying out hazardous work in a very brave manner.´´ The Recommendation states: ´´In 1943 a serious explosion took place on an ammunition train in Maison Caree Railway Station (North Africa). Cpl. Vickers and L/Cpl. Gommersall were members of a heavy rescue party which was ordered to the scene. On arrival they found one end of the train burning fiercely with continuous heavy explosions, and it was decided to move the train to a position of safety. This it was found impossible to do as one truck had been derailed, it was, therefore, found necessary to move it truck by truck and for this purpose to uncouple the trucks. Cpl. Vickers and L/Cpl. Gomersall assisted by another N.C.O. volunteered for this duty. They wrapped their overalls round their heads and with fire hoses played on them approached the burning train and in spite of the terrific heat they succeeded in uncoupling the trucks, which were then manhandled to a place of safety. Cpl. Vickers and L/Cpl. Gomersall were in continual danger from the fire and the exploding ammunition. They showed great courage and complete disregard for their personal safety and their courageous action was undoubtedly instrumental in preventing further damage to a vital railway line, to the trucks and their contents, and also to adjacent property as well as probable further loss of life.´´
