Army of India 1799-1826, short hyphen reverse die type, one clasp, Laswarree (Lieut. J.S. Brownrigg, 12th. N.I.), officially impressed, Royal Mint, and additionally inscribed to left of naming ´W.D.S.B. 1887´, minor edge bruising, very fine Estimate £ 3,000-3,500 Captain John Studholme Brownrigg, M.P., born London, March 1786, the youngest son of Lieutenant J.S. Brownrigg, 38th Foot, and the nephew of General Sir Robert Brownrigg, Bt.; Cadet, 1800; arrived in India, August 1801; Commissioned Ensign, 12th Native Infantry, November 1801; Lieutenant, September 1803; served with the 12th Native Infantry during the Second Mahratta War as part of the Commander-in-Chief General Lake´´s Grand Army, and was present at the Battle of Laswarree, ´´as fierce a fight as ever was fought by men´´, 1.11.1803; transferred to 8th Native Infantry, Adjutant and Quartermaster, 1805-1810; present at the capture of Java, 26.8.1811; Secretary, Military Board, February 1813-April 1820; Captain, February 1815; Resigned in India, April 1820; elected M.P. for Boston, January 1835, with 532 votes; re-elected September 1837, with 456 votes; re-elected August 1841, again with 532 votes; retired, 1847. Captain Brownrigg died at home in Middlesex, September 1853. Fewer than 10 medals awarded with Laswarree as a single clasp. Whilst Captain Brownrigg served in Java, his name does not appear on the published roll as having received a Military General Service Medal with clasp for Java. Provenance: J.B. Hayward, March 1970
