Sea Gallantry Medal, G.V.R., silver (Edward James Totham. "Hope" 1st. October. 1911.), nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 250-280 At about 8pm on the 30th September, 1911, the fishing Ketch Hope, of Lowestoft, when lying to, about 60 miles SE of Lowestoft, sprung a serious leak. Next morning, the S.S. Rievaulx Abbey, of Hull, approached as near as was safe, and her lifeboat, manned by the Second Mate George Johnson and four Able Seamen, J.R. Markham, J.W. Hill, E.J. Totham, and T. McKessack, rescued the Hope´´s crew of five men. The rescuers incurred considerable risk owing to the strong gale and heavy seas. Their boat was half full of water before they left their ship, and it was eventually smashed to pieces. Five silver Sea Gallantry Medals were awarded for the action Provenance: Christie, February 1982.
