Lot: 365

Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, one clasp, Belmont (Sgt. J. Brennan, Irish Guards), worn, good fine, scarce as a single clasp award and to unit Estimate £ 140-180 Lieutenant and Quartermaster J. Brennan, born 1873; served during the Boer War with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, and was wounded at Belmont, 23.11.1899; invalided back to England the following month; the medal appears to have been claimed and issued to him in the Irish Guards, with whom he subsequently served during the Great War; the Regiment was formed 1.4.1900 by Queen Victoria, and although a few Guardsmen saw action as mounted infantry in the final stages of the Boer War the regiment as an entity did not leave the United Kingdom for operational service until the Great War - making Brennan´´s medal an interesting and scarce example; commissioned Second Lieutenant and Quartermaster Irish Guards, 16.7.1915, after 18 years and 274 days in the ranks; Lieutenant and Quartermaster 2.3.1916.
