Auction: 9024 - The Property of a Gentleman Orders, Decorations and Campaign Medals
Lot: 28
Naval General Service 1793-1840, two clasps, Martinique, Guadaloupe (Hugh Charles, Surgeon.), traces of mounting to edge at left and right of suspension claw, and claw re-affixed, nearly very fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 Hugh Charles is given in the published transcription of the roll as entitled to the Guadeloupe clasp only. However Adm. 171/1 page 283 (Martinique) gives Charles as Assistant Surgeon in H.M.S. Pompee; and on page 302 (Guadeloupe) as Surgeon in H.M.S. Star. A note underneath the Guadeloupe clasp states ´´not joined August 1809´´. This would suggest that Charles was not appointed to H.M.S. Pompee in time to qualify for the Martinique clasp. However both clasps are listed in the Admiralty Claimants List by the same reference number ´´X/121´´. It is of course a possibility that correspondence was undertaken at a later date between the recipient and the Admiralty with regard to his claim and as a consequence a correction was made. Unfortunately such letters have not survived. Charles´´s medal, apart from the suspension claw being re-affixed, appears entirely as issued.
