R.N.); Italy, Kingdom, Messina Earthquake Medal 1908, silver, unnamed as issued, edge details worn in places, servere contact marks, therefore good fine, with recipient´s Corps of Commissionaires Medal, silver (Hallmark´s for Birmingham 1917) and enamel, the reverse engraved ´T. Mathews´ Estimate £ 100-140 170321 Petty Officer Tom Mathews, born Sutton, Surrey, 1876; joined Royal Navy 1894; service included in H.M.S. Minerva, 22.9.1908-17.10.1910, during which time he particpated in the rescue operations after the Messina Earthquake, 1908, and was one of the men from the Navy who landed from the ships to give assistance; service during the Great War included in H.M.S. Vulcan (Torpedo-Boat Depot ship), 30.7.1915-20.7.1917, and H.M.S. Centaur (Light Cruiser), 1.8.1917-9.12.1917. Provenance: Spink December 1991
