Impregnable, May 1897; Ordinary Seaman, H.M.S. Cambrian, December 1899; Able Seaman, H.M.S. Hyacinth, 15.10.1900; Leading Seaman, H.M.S. Cambrian, 29.12.1906; Petty Officer, H.M.S. Leander, 1.11.1912; served during the Great War in H.M.S. Indefatigable; killed in action at the Battle of Jutland, 31.5.1916, when H.M.S. Indefatigable suffered a number of direct hits to the magazine area and sank quickly with the loss of 1,014 lives out of a total crew of 1,017, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.
