x The China 1842 Medal to Lieutenant, Later Captain, H.C. Hawkins, Royal Navy, Who Was Mentioned in Despatches for His Services Ashore at the Capture of Chinghae, 10.10.1841, and Promoted Commander for His Services During the War China 1842 (H.C. Hawkins, Lieut. H.M.S. Blenheim.), toned, good very fine Estimate £ 800-1,000 Captain Henry Caesar Hawkins, R.N., born Somerset, 1809, the son of Sir John Caesar Hawkins; educated at the Naval College, Portsmouth; he was appointed as Volunteer to H.M.S. Blanche, for service on the South American Station,1824; Midshipman 1825; passed for the Rank of Lieutenant and promoted ´´Mate´´; served in H.M.S. Maidstone on the Cape of Good Hope, from October 1827 (O´´Byrne gives him as being Mentioned in Despatches for assisting French troops to attack Morea Castle, however this would appear to be another Hawkins, serving in H.M.S. Blonde, the recipient was in South African waters with the Maidstone at the time); served as Acting Lieutenant in H.M.S. Donegal, from 1831; Lieutenant 1838, and appointed in this capacity to H.M.S. Blenheim the following year for service in China and the East Indies; he was in action with her at Amoy and the fortified Island of Kolangsoo, August 1841; he landed with the right Column under the command of Captain Herbert, with Captain Bourchier commanding the Battalion of Seamen present, at Chinghae, 10.10.1841 (Mentioned in Rear Admiral W. Parker´´s Despatch London Gazette 1842, p396); rather surprisingly given that he was only a junior Lieutenant, he was also promoted to Commander ´´in consequence of the recent war in China´´ (London Gazette 1842, p3821); promoted Commander with Seniority dated 23.12.1842; served with H.M.´´s Coast Guard from 1851; retired Captain, 1864.
