x Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, Syria (S.H. Henderson, Midshipman.), suspension slack, very fine Estimate £ 800-1,000 Samuel Hood Henderson served as Midshipman in H.M.S. Edinburgh, on and off the coast of Syria, 1840. Rear Admiral Samuel Hood Henderson (1823-1883), born North End, Hampshire; studied at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, before joining H.M.S. Princess Charlotte, as ´´College Volunteer´´, April 1837; transferred to H.M.S. Edinburgh in August of the same year and served with her on the South American and Mediterranean Stations; advanced Midshipman Ordinary, April 1839, and his vessel took part in the bombardment of the St. Jean D´´Acre fortress, 3.11.1840; served as Acting Mate in H.M.S. Illustrious from August 1841; passed his examination for Lieutenant, 19.6.1842, and was consequently advanced to the rank of Mate; advanced to Lieutenant, 28.6.1846, whilst serving im H.M.S. Canopus; appointed to the Navy´´s Gunnery Training Ship H.M.S. Excellent, August 1848; promoted Commander, October 1855; appointed in this rank to the command of H.M.S. Arrow on the Mediterranean Station, May 1856; commanded H.M.S. Megaera, April 1860-April 1863; Captain March 1863; served in command of H.M.S.
