x New South Wales Early Letters and Handstamps 1838 (17 Dec.) entire from W. Bannatyne at Sydney "pr Florentia", deleted and replaced with "Roslyn Castle" (a convict ship) to England, rated "3" (paid) and "1/-" and showing fine "sydney ship letter/sydney" oval d.s. (19.1) and London "g/p." h.s. applied in London, the reverse with framed "india letter/brighton" (S2) and two London d.s. (12.1); interesting contents in which the writer states that he is "a Candidate for the Under Sheriffship of the Colony" and "The salary attached to it will be about £400 p´r an.". He also writes of the Myall Creek massacre, in which 30 Aboriginals were killed, and ends his letter "I have just returned from seeing the seven men all launched into eternity at the same moment, it was an awful sight and has made me feel quite sick".
