The coins have recently come to light, and the original paper wrapper that enclosed this coin is included in the lot. The coin is described in ink on the wrapper as ´´First American Currency (1776) (1796) - Pewter, showing great porosity-.´´ With the coins were several other small items and papers all connected with Holland House. William Doggett served as a page at Holland House and later became Librarian. He is depicted in an oil painting by Charles Robert Leslie, ´´Lord and Lady Holland, Dr. Allen and William Doggett in the Library at Holland House 1839´´. The coin also comes with a letter in its original Registered envelope, dated 18 March 1908, addressed to Mr G C Yales, Holmfield, Urmston, from Mr Daniel Howorth of 24 Villiers Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. Dear Mr Yale Enclosed is Capt . Doggett´´s coin which is a better specimen than mine. In ´´Manchester Numismatic Society´´s Transactions´´ and in ´´Crosby´´s Early Coins of America´´ there are illustrations and descriptions of the coins - a very interseting coin but not very rare. I shall be very pleased to look over your Australian tokens etc etc whenever we can arrange; my own collection is large, but still capable of improvement & addition. Very kind regards sincerely yours Daniel D Howarth.
