William I (1066-1087), Penny, 1.43g broken, canopy type (BMC 3), Bath, Brungar, facing bust crowned and diademed within a canopy of two columns, rev. cross bottonée over quadrilateral with annulet at centre, +brvngar on bade (N.843; S.1251), once mended, now broken into two parts, but with clear mint signature, probably the only example of this type for this mint Estimate £ 150-200 provenance Elmore Jones, Glendining, 10 April 1984, lot 1023 PWP Carlyon Britton, Sotheby, 11-13 November 1918, lot 1844 Grinsell in his 1973 summary of Bath mint coins listed one example of this type, this coin (illustrated in Plate IV, coin no. 42). Not listed in BMC, SCBI or EMC. Quite possibly the only known example of this type for the Bath mint. Brungar is a very rare moneyer with there thought to be only one other coin (type BMC I) known by him.
