France 1849-50 10c. brownish bistre horizontal pair and 40c. orange retouched "4" variety, all slightly cut-into to large margins, tied to 1852 (7 Aug.) entire letter to New York, Paris star cancellations and additionally tied by "5" in circle postage due marking applied on arrival. The entire posted too late for the Havre line steamship and despite being underpaid was sent via the next Cunard sailing, showing red "bureau central" datestamp of 12 Aug. below; the entire with horizontal filing fold and the adhesives with some tiny faults not affecting the fine and colourful appearance of this extremely rare usage of the retouched "4" variety on a Transatlantic cover.
