Crimean War Prisoner of War Mail 1854 (27 June) envelope from London to "Edmund Lawless Esqr." (Assistant Surgeon aboard the Tiger and taken prisoner by the Russians on 12 May) "late of H.M.S. Tiger Post Office Odessa" with "Post Office" deleted and replaced with "care of Sign. Cambiaggio" in red ink, rated "4" in blue ink, London d.s. overstamped by "3 1/2 groschen" h.s. and showing "aus england per aachen" c.d.s. (28.6) in red on reverse; the cover accompanied by another envelope addressed to Lawless, apparently carried privately and showing Odessa Quarantine oval d.s. (31.10) on reverse. A wonderful pair of Crimean War covers Estimate £ 1,800-2,000 Note: The paddle steamer "Tiger" was one of a small blockading force keeping watch over the port of Odessa during the Crimean campaign. On 12 May 1854, in thick fog, "Tiger" was chasing a Russian schooner when she ran aground on rocks 4 1/2 miles from Odessa. When the fog cleared she was bombarded by the Russians and, being unable to bring her guns to bear, surrendered. The "Tiger" ensign was presented to the Czar and some of her guns were carried in triumph to Odessa as trophies of war
