United States Asphalte of Seyssel Company, £20 shares, £2 paid, London 183(8), signed by Thomas Aspinwall as director, eagle clutches arrows and shield, black, good very fine. Asphalte of Seyssel refers to the bituminous substance first located near Seyssel in Germany, used mainly for pavements. Estimate £ 250-300 Thomas Aspinwall (1786-1876). Soldier and lawyer. He was a major of the 9th United States Infantry in the war of 1812 and lost an arm at Fort Erie. United States Consul in London, 1815-1858.
