France 1582 (15 June), a four page insurance policy (230mm. x 350mm.), drawn up at the Royal Exchange in London and signed by "Ri Chandler" (Richard Chandler, holding letters patent granted by Queen Elizabeth I in 1674 to effect insurance), contents including "Bartholomew Corsini from Deppe (Dieppe) to Rye, uppon Sylkes and Cyphers", the sum assured was £400 at 2 1/2 premium "sylkes in the Hawke of Rye, Master William Bage, cyphers in the Grace of Rye, master William Harman, or in the Marye Fortune of Rye, master John Woode.", After the names of the underwriters was an endorsement dated 25.6.1582 "The Hawk of Rye and the Grace of Rye being safely arrived. The said cyphers ... are laden in the Marye Fortune, it is not known wether it will come to Rye or London, we take assurance at 3%"; superb condition, a rare and highly important document.
