Auction: 9007 - Great Britain Stamps & Postal History
Lot: 10
Great Britain Postal History 1719-1857, a collection of items relating to the punishment of Transportation to the colonies, a few referring to the "Americas" though mostly pertaining to Australia. Includes Acts of Parliament, entire letters and letter inserts from/to convicts and some from military surgeons, police officers, freed prisoners, etc.; documents with "Conditional Pardons", "Tickets of Leave", etc. Many of the cases and personal testimonies are truly extraordinary - the usual minimum sentence was seven years and many of the convicts had been found guilty of only minor offences, such as petty theft. Most are neatly mounted and annotated on leaves, accompanied by much original research with copies of public records/court documents, each item with full description from the original sale. A fascinating assembly. (48 items) Estimate £ 400-500
