Sudan The Nile Expeditionary Force 1898 (4 Apr.) envelope "From No. 2790 Pte. J. Salmon, F Coy 1st. Lincoln Regt. Soudan. On Active Service" at Umbadieh to Cairo, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and with part "travelling post office/s.p.s." c.d.s. at right, boxed "T" below and bearing, at foot, Egyptian Postage Due 2m. green (2), one bisected diagonally and cancelled with Cairo arrival c.d.s. (19.4), the reverse with Half (12.4) and Cairo (18.4) c.d.s.; fine and rare. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: the 1st. Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment arrived at Alexandria from Malta on 6th. February 1897. It moved to Cairo from where it was ordered, on 3rd. January 1898, to join Kitchener´´s army in the re-conquest of Sudan When the campaign commenced large numbers of Egyptian troops were employed at the front. As the campaign moved deeper into the Sudan it was difficult to provide postage stamps to the advancing soldiers. Privates and NCO´´s had already been granted a reduced rate of 3m. Where postage was not prepaid, a charge was made of 6m. As this was no fault of the writer a single rate of 3m. was applied. As there was no 3m. Postage Due stamp a Decree of 14th. February 1898 authorised bisection of the 2m. value to make up the 3m. rate
