Sudan The First Suakin Expedition 1885 (22 Mar.) envelope "From Thomas Pell" at Oxford to "2294 Corpl. G.A. Pell 1st. Squadron 5th. R.I. Lancers Egypt", bearing 1881 1d. lilac cancelled with "603" duplex and additionally tied by fine "british army post office/egypt" c.d.s. with code "C", marked "killed in action" and redirected to "Postmaster Oxford England" with redirection arrival c.d.s. (23.4) on reverse. A rare ingoing item of mail to a soldier killed in action. Photo Estimate £ 700-800 Note: Two squadrons of H.M. 5th. Royal Irish Lancers were sent to the Sudan for service with the expedition against Osman Digna. On 22nd. March 1885 an advance commenced towards the Arab stronghold at Tamai. An officer´´s patrol with four N.C.O. and men, including Corporal Pell was sent in front of the line of advance. The patrol was caught up in a great Arab wave sweeping down on the British force from Tamai and was killed to a man
