Sierra Leone 1897 (16 Mar.) envelope "From C.S.M. Harrison 2/W.I.R., S. Leone W. Coast Africa" to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1897 1d. dull purple and green neatly cancelled and tied by Freetown c.d.s., Paid Liverpool Br. Packet transit c.d.s. (6.4) in red at left. Woolwich arrival c.d.s. (6.4) on reverse; the adhesive with some soiling though the only known example of this stamp on a soldier´s letter. Photo Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 Note: The majority of troops garrisoning Freetown came from West India Regiments. Few letters from soldiers to the U.K. exist except from non-commissioned officers who by British Acts of Parliament, were entitled to send letters under the usual restrictions for 1d. by the Post Office Packet service of the British & African Steam Navigation Co. to Liverpool
