Niger Company Territories The Borgu Incident 1898 (18 Oct.) front and small part back "From Sergt. D. Brown 2nd. West African Field Force, Kyama, W.(A.). Stamps not procurable" to another soldier in England, countersigned by Commanding Officer and showing a fair strike (applied inverted) of the chamfer-framed "the royal niger company/chartered & limited./post office/akassa." d.s. in violet overcancelled with "1d" charge h.s. and showing Liverpool Br. Packet c.d.s. (21.11) at right Estimate £ 100-120 Note: The 2nd. Battalion West African Frontier Force came in to being in March 1898. The battalion was sent immediately to the Borgu Province where its presence persuaded the French from neighbouring Dahomey to cease extending their posts into British Territory. Regimental mail from Borgu would have gone to Jebba, headquarters site of the expedition. From July 1898 mail from Jebba was taken down the Niger River to Burutu from where it connected with the British Packet service of the African Steamship Company carrying mail to Liverpool
