Mauritius 1897 (25 Apr.) envelope from "7301 Pte. C. Nestles 1st. Batt. King´s Royal Rifles" at Curepipe to a fellow soldier in the 2nd. Battalion of the same regiment at Cape Town, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 2c. (2) and 3d. cancelled with Curepipe c.d.s., the reverse with part despatch c.d.s. (27.4) and Cape Town (12.5) c.d.s.; the envelope with horizontal crease which crosses one of the 2c. values, and with a little foxing otherwise sound. Photo Estimate £ 600-800 Note: On 20th. November 1896 the 1st. Battalion H.M. 60th. Rifles were placed under orders for Mauritius, first visiting Cape Town where four companies disembarked for duty. Headquarters and four remaining companies sailed for Mauritius on 6th. January 1897 aboard the R.I.M.S. "Warren Hastings". On the night of the 13/14th. January the ship struck rocks on the coast of Reunion and began to sink. All were safely disembarked and the battalion eventually sailed from Reunion aboard the "Lalpoora" reaching Mauritius on 18th. January When Mauritius joined the U.P.U. in 1877 it changed its currency to cents and rupees. The soldiers rate became 8 cents (2d.) which was reduced to 7 cents on the devaluation of the Mauritian currency on 1st. January 1893
