Egypt The War with France 1802 (4 Feb.) entire letter from Sergeant J. Wickens, H.M. 80th. Regiment from Alexandria to England, showing oval-framed "Ship Letter/Crown/deal" h.s., fumigated with slits and scorch marks at the Motherbank Quarantine Station and rated "10" (deleted) and "11" (full postage for the Inward Ship Letter fee and Inland Postage), small part arrival c.d.s. on reverse. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: Even after Nelson´´s victory on the Nile in 1798 the French continued to occupy Cairo and Alexandria. Forces from the Mediterranean and India, including the 80th, Regiment, were ordered to expel them. The 80th. landed at Kosseir, on the Red Sea, on 8th. June 1801, eventually arriving at Kena on 6th. July where they heard of the surrender of Cairo. The regiment reached Alexandria on 10th. December to find that it had also fallen. The regiment remained on garrison duty until June 1802
