India The Indian Mutiny, 1857-59 1858 (late June) entire from "Sergeant J. Porter 71st. Regt." with Sir Hugh Rose´s Central India Field Force at Morar to Canada, bearing 1855 1a. brown (defective) cancelled with diamond of squares and showing crescent-shaped "india", Indore (29.6), Madras (12.7) and Liverpool (8.9) c.d.s., the reverse with Madras (12.7), Montreal (5.10) and indistinct arrival (7.10) c.d.s., the contents, being the last page of the letter, include comments on the writer and his brothers health, and concluding "Direct to Central India Field Force". An unusual destination. Photo Estimate £ 300-400 Note: This letter was written just after the battle and capture of Morar on 16 June in which the regiment saw action. Afterwards it remained to protect the town while cavalry and artillery of Brigadier Napier´´s force, after the fall of Gwalior on 20 June, went in pursuit of Tantia Topi the rebel chief, who had escaped just before the fort was captured As the Gwalior and Morar post offices were still not operating when the letter was written it was forwarded to Indore from where it was carried to Madras
