India 1827 (25 Feb.) entire letter "From Mary Flinn Waterford" Ireland to her son Gunner P. Flinn, 4th. Company, 2nd. Battalion Bengal Foot Artillery at Dum Dum and showing Waterford (26.9), London Paid (2.3) and Post paid Ship Letter London oval d.s. (2.3), all on face and, on reverse, large part oval-framed "dum dum/post office" (across join) and various watery Calcutta c.d.s., the letter failing to catch up with the addressee and showing manuscript "not with the 4th. 2nd Bn Arty" and "returned from" h.s. (2, one part only), before the letter could reach Benares Gunner Flinn had already died from a disease contracted during the war and with later manuscript "died Oct 1826" across the face; a few faults, mainly on reverse, though a rare and most unusual cover full of character. Photo Estimate £ 200-250 Note: The regiment saw active service during the 1st. Burmese War with a force whose objective was the capture of Arakan, which was effected on 1st. April 1825. Fever and dysentery broke out amongst the troops and the Government was compelled to break up the force
