China The 1st. China War, 1840-42 1840 (19 July) entire letter "From No. 776Pte. James Henderson Cameronians" at Chusan "Via Falmouth" to Scotland, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing faint oval-framed "india" and manuscript "2" charge mark, the reverse with Calcutta Ship Letter Free c.d.s. (date unclear) and London (15.12) transit c.d.s.; face panel a little soiled and strengthened in places though a fine letter giving details of the capture of Chusan. Photo Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Note: The contents include "We embarked on 24th. March for Chinah with the determination of Punishing them for their arrogance and want of faith towards the English Flag - which they insulted in a gross manner, we arrived in Penang - a beautiful island. After getting stuck on a sandbank the ship then proceeded to Singapore before sailing for Chusan where they met the "Wellesley" in front of the town. Firing commenced and the town was taken with "a great number of Chinese killed and wounded"
