Burma 1886 (Apr.) envelope "From 710 S.C. Keeley 2nd. R.S. Fusiliers Taungdwingyi" to England, and marked "Stamps not obtainable On Active Service", countersigned by the Commanding Officer of the Eastern Mobile Column and bearing 1a. plum cancelled at the Base Office with Thayetmyo squared-circle d.s. (15.4), the reverse with Bombay (23.4), Ascot (10.5) and Sunninghill Village (10.5) c.d.s.; the envelope with a few faults though a most unusual item written during the Pacification period after the 3rd. Burmese War. Photo Estimate £ 200-250 Note: Although the 3rd. Burmese War had ended, bands of armed robbers terrorised the country which required the continuing presence of a substantial army. The fighting continued and consisted of a large number of small expeditions. The 2nd. Battalion H.M. Royal Scots Fusiliers formed part of the Eastern Mobile Column which started from Thayetmyo and followed the banks of the Irrawaddy River, capturing the important town of Taungdwingyi in early April 1886 provenance: Gerald Davis, 1990
