Burma 1854 (1 Nov.) entire "From H Jenkins Sergt H.M. 84th." at Rangoon "Per Steamer via Southampton" to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1854 1/2a. Die I blue (2) neatly cancelled with diamond of dots, also showing framed "india" and "2" charge mark, the reverse with four transit marks, one of which purports to be a Rangoon Post Office c.d.s. Extremely rare, being one of only two known soldiers letters to the U.K. bearing 1854 issue stamps to pay the Indian inland postage. R.P.S. Certificate (1986). It remained on garrison duty until recalled to India in 1857 With the introduction of postage stamps in India and Burma on 1 October 1854, the Indian Post Office Act XVII failed to provide free Indian Postage for soldiers. This was corrected five weeks later. It also denied pre-payment of postage on letters from soldiers to the U.K. As a result letters sent under the usual conditions were charged the unpaid soldiers letter rate of 2d. on arrival
