Afghanistan 1st. Afghan War, 1838-42 1839 (30 Aug.) deep blue-green paper entire letter "From Private John Abbot 17 Regt. Foot" at Kabul to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer, rated "3" and showing a fair strike of the "dublin/Ship Letter" h.s. (S.5), the reverse with Calcutta Ship Letter boxed d.s. (28.9), examiners "Star" h.s. and faint arrival d.s.; a few small edge faults though interesting contents giving details of the writer´s long and tortuous journey from Poonah to Kabul. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: No Post Office was open at Kabul at this time, mail being sent in a closed bag to Calcutta. From Calcutta the letter was carried by private ship and landed at its first port of call at Dublin. No "India Soldiers" handstamp to identify the soldier´´s unpaid privilege rate was available in Ireland and a manuscript "3" was written in its place, indicating 2d. Sea Postage and 1d.
