William Whiteley Ltd., debenture stock certificate, 1(902), ´Universal Provider´ & globes at left, black, pink underprint, printed by Waterlow & Sons, VF. One of the most famous of department stores, established in Westbourne Grove, West London in the 1860´s. Gradually acquired adjoining shops and labelled himself ´The Universal Provider´. He was unpopular with local tradesmen and his business suffered several mysterious fires, the worst being in 1897 which burnt for 4 days. He rebuilt the store which then employed 6,000 staff. Whiteley was shot dead in his office by a man claiming to be his illegitimate son in 1907. Estimate £ 50-70
