Birkbeck Share and Debenture Trust, £10 debenture, 1889, facsmile signature of Francis Ravenscroft as trustee, attractive coat of arms at top, black, pink underprint, with coupons, VF. The trust has its origins in the Birkbeck Building and Freehold Land Society, formed in 1851. The Society developed a large deposit-taking business and by 1872 was trading under the title of the Birkbeck Bank. Southampton Buildings in Chancery Lane, were rebuilt in 1902. In 1910, there was a run on the bank following rumours about its financial position and it was forced into receivership in 1911. Goodwill and premises were purchased from the receiver by London County & Westminster Bank Ltd Estimate £ 30-40 Francis Ravenscroft (1829-1902), from an old family of forensic wigmakers. Francis became Governor of Birkbeck College in 1849, founded the Birkbeck Building Society in 1851, guaranteed the cost of developing new premises for Birkbeck College in 1885. He managed the Birkbeck Bank until his death in 1902.
