x New Zealand 1906 Christchurch Exhibition, 1d. claret, large part original gum; faint trace of soiling on gum at top, barely apparent on face. An attractive example of this rare stamp. S.G. 371a, £6,500. Photo Estimate £ 3,000-3,500 Note: The selected colour for the 1d. value was claret, and a supply of 240,000 examples was printed. It was considered that the shade was too dark to do credit to the design and a further printing was ordered. Of the 4,000 sheets printed in claret, one was sent to the Exhibition authorities, one to the Postmaster-General, and 14 sheets were held by the Post and Telegraph Department. The sheet in claret, forwarded to the Exhibition Committee, was placed with the stock printed in vermilion and was issued to the post office at the Exhibition
