Gilbert and Ellice Islands Covers and Cancellations Raider Mail 1940 (19 Oct.) envelope from North Carolina addressed to J.M. Ross at Ocean Island, bearing US 5c. and showing red crayon "Raider Mail" with, on reverse, Sydney (23.1.41) and Ocean Island (11.3.41) datestamps. Rare. Photo Estimate £ 300-400 Note: This cover was carried on board the S.S. "Triona" which was sunk by a German raider on the 8th December. The raider appeared off Nauru and sunk five of seven vessels waiting to load. Among the items rescued were various mail-bags which were landed at Emirau, New Guinea.
