Tasmania Early Letters and Handstamps 1846 (26 Oct.) entire letter from Hobart to Geelong, showing Crowned "general post office/hobart town/vdl" d.s. and, on reverse (part around seal torn away) Melbourne Ship Letter oval d.s., interesting contents giving an insight in to the privately organised immigration efforts; 1850 (May) entire letter from Melbourne to Launceston showing despatch Ship Letter and arrival c.d.s. on reverse, 1850 and 1851 entire letters from Sydney to Launceston showing Paid and Paid Ship Letter c.d.s. on face and arrival c.d.s. on reverse, the former also showing arrival boxed Ship Letter d.s.; some faults in places (mainly on the interior) though a generally attractive group of Inter-Colonial mail Estimate £ 120-150 Note: The purpose of the Geelong and Portland Bay Immigration Society appears to have been to obtain shepherds and other farm labourers for the sheep properties of south-western Victoria. The cover is accompanied by a copy of an article on the subject
